Random Acts Of Kindness

Today it’s pretty chilly outdoors. Yet I can hear someone nearby using a snowblower to clear their driveway of snow. Nosey as heck, I finally peeked out my window to see if it was my neighbor’s son dutifully fulfilling his chores of keeping the family driveway free of snow and ice.

Much to my surprise my own driveway was clear! I glanced at the man whose slow gait reminded me of golden-agers who once had spry steps but now walked to the slow beat of their own well-used drums. Two doors down, the man was slowly and methodically clearing his own driveway. What a prime example of a random act of kindness. My retired neighbor two houses away had not only, cleared my driveway, but the neighbor’s right next to him as well. How thoughtful!

It reminded me of a story where a gentleman stood on the corner of a busy intersection on his birthday and proceeded to hand out $5 bills to every person who walked passed him. He stated that his birthday is a blessing and it gave him pleasure to do this on his special day.

Although yesterday was my birthday, and thus it has come and gone along with fond memories of me blowing out my birthday candles, perhaps next year I will do a random act of kindness too!

Cheesecake Factory “Food Porn”

A sign for The Cheesecake Factory restaurant is pictured in Glendale

This a RANT:

A Cheesecake Factory pasta dish with more than 3,000 calories – or more than an entire day of the recommended calorie intake for an average adult – is #1 on this year’s Xtreme Eating list of the most unhealthy dishes at U.S. chain restaurants. Their Bistro Shrimp Pasta, made with a butter and cream sauce and topped with fried shrimp, has 3,120 calories and about 89gr of saturated fat with 1,090mg of sodium. Yikes!!

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a consumer-focused nonprofit group promoting healthier eating, compiles an annual list of “food porn” to alert consumers to menu items with eye-popping levels of calories, saturated fat, sugar and/or sodium. “This Pasta’s like eating three orders of Olive Garden’s Lasagna Classico plus an order of tiramisu for dinner!” CSPI said.

The 2013 list of restaurants in the hot seat was released last Wednesday.

CSPI for years has used the “bad awards” to raise awareness and drum up support for calorie disclosure on restaurant menus – something larger chains soon will be required to do under the U.S. health reform law.

As some of you may know, Cheesecake Factory is known for its ample portions and wide selection of decadent cheesecakes – many which, shockingly enough, weigh in at around 1,000 calories a slice. Ouch.

Other Xtreme Eating winners for 2013 include:

Johnny Rockets: A single Bacon Cheddar Double Hamburger comes in at 1,770 calories, 50gr of saturated fat and 2,380mg of sodium. For comparison, THREE Quarter Pounders with Cheese from McDonald’s have 1,570 calories total.

Smoothie King: Their 40-ouncePeanut Power Plus Grape Smoothie has 1,460 calories and 22 tsp of added sugar plus 29 tsp of naturally occurring sugar!

Maggiano’s Little Italy: One slice of their Chocolate Zuccotto Cake weighs nearly one pound and has 1,820 calories and 62gr of saturated fat – or the equivalent of 15 Hostess Ho Hos!!!

Better hit the gym after eating any of these selections! πŸ™‚

Humorous Signs: Parking Anyone???

What?!?? This doesn’t make much sense, doest it? Laugh.

EXERPT – NightFlyer I: Tales Of The Shadow Realm, Book 1

“You know what I want, baby–and I won’t stop until I get it.”

Her breath caught at his words. The determination in his eyes and his warm breath caressing her neck sent a rush of heat all the way down to her tailbone, and zeroed in straight between her legs. “How bad do you want it?” she managed to get out.

“Bad enough to move mountains,” he whispered in her ear…

Mysterious Crooked Forest

Poland’s Mysterious Crooked Forest:

In a tiny corner of western Poland a forest of about 400 pine trees grow with a 90 degree bend at the base of their trunks – all bent northward. Surrounded by a larger forest of straight growing pine trees this collection of curved trees, or “Crooked Forest” is a mystery.

“Print” A House, Or An Entire Neighborhood. Oh My.

This is definitely a RAVE:

Contour Crafting:

A University of Southern California professor devised a layered fabrication method he calls Contour Crafting that he believes could be used to print entire buildings.

Professor Khoshnevis isn’t the first person to suggest 3-D printing structures like this, but his method is novel in that it would also add plumbing, electrical wiring, and other infrastructure as the structure is built, layer by layer, from the ground up. The technology could be used for rapidly-deployable emergency housing, he says, but could someday also be used to generate luxury, built-to-spec homes.

This story is a continuation from book 1 (Dare To The Max) of the Wizard’s Prey series.

It is an intense, gritty romance between two headstrong people: Lexus and an alien wizard named DareNtek. Sparks and heat certainly fly all over the place with these two people. Oh my goodness!!!
